Yannie Rumbaoa, the first Filipino coin engraver, was chosen to be the group’s President during their recent informal meeting at the UST grounds. A self-made-man and accomplished painter, engraver and sculptor, Rumbaoa is the first Filipino who undertook a coin mintage course in Rome, Italy and serves the Philippine government as the Master Engraver of the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas. An expert in bass relief, a technique that retains the natural contours of figures thus allowing the work to be viewed from many angles without distortion, Rumbaoa is likewise acclaimed as the first Filipino to design the country’s coins which reaches every island in the Philippine archipelago. He has engraved numerous commemorative medals and coins including UST’s 400th year medallion.
